Tips for Driving in the Rain

Brought to you by Pearson Auto Group

Whether it's a light sprinkle or a downpour, driving in the rain can get a bit tricky. Rainy conditions are normally associated with higher accident rates, so it stands to reason why bad weather can intimidate even the most experienced of drivers. No matter what part of Virginia you live in, it's a forgone conclusion that you're going to face driving in the rain at some point. Knowing how the wet roads and reduced visibility affect how your vehicle handles will improve your safe driving in every situation. We here at Pearson Auto Group have compiled some tips to help you get through those inevitable downpours.

Wait until the weather improves

We know that this is not always possible, but if you have the time and you feel uncomfortable driving in the rain you can always postpone your trip or commute to see if the weather improves. There is no reason to put yourself in danger by driving in wet conditions if you can avoid it. You can check weather reports or install an app on your phone that keeps track of the weather so you know when to head out on your trip.

Check your vehicle's equipment

It's best if you make sure that your vehicle is in working order before you head out into the rain. Head down to Pearson Auto Group and have our experts check your headlights, taillights, and windshield wipers to make sure that they work efficiently when they are needed during particularly rainy conditions. Also, make sure to have our technicians check your vehicle's tires to make sure they have enough tread. If your vehicle does not have enough tread and is looking bald, then you may need to have them changed.

Take it slow

You should always adhere to the posted speed limit when driving in wet weather, you should also drive slower than you would normally. When the roads are wet things can get incredibly dangerous and your vehicle's reaction time can be slower, which is why you need to take things a bit slower as the rain intensifies.

Turn on headlights and windshield wipers

Many states require you to turn your vehicle's headlights as you are driving in the rain. Even if there is only a light mist, making sure that your vehicle's headlights are turned on will not only increase your own visibility but will also help other drivers see your car more clearly as well. Also, make sure that your windshield wipers are on too. While this may seem like a no-brainer so people do forget to turn on their wipers if there is only light rain. Most vehicles can adjust their windshield wiper speed so that moisture will be cleared during a light mist or during a heavy downpour. There are also several products that you can purchase that can be sprayed or wiped onto the glass to defer the collection of rainwater.

Maintain a safe distance and avoid heavy braking

While it's raining it's important to keep a larger distance between your vehicle and the traffic in front of you. Stopping your vehicle is more difficult in the rain, so maintaining a distance of multiple car lengths between your car and other vehicles will help you stay safe. To properly slow your vehicle, try taking your foot off the accelerator a touch earlier than normal so you are more prepared to slow down or stop. Make sure you don't use cruise control so you can keep your attention on using the gas and brake in tune.
